![[Nightflying Notes From The Pub]](http://www.nightflying.com/pub.gif)
Rumba Revolution, aka The Rev Room, has a line-up in

Bash, Owl City, Deas Veil, Casey Donahue, Jessica Carder, Brady Seals,
Nathan Lee Jackson, American Idiot, 607, Falcon Scott, Free Micah,
Badhand, Big Smith and a whole lot more.
In addition, every Monday is now Open Mic night so
if you ever wanted to do it onstage here's your chance.
The restaurant side serves up delectable island
cuisine, has a full bar and a cool full-service outdoor deck facing the
river.
And the entire building is famously wired for sound.
It's exactly what Chris King and Suzon Awbrey wished
for when they relocated from the wilds of Fayetteville to LR.

Grumpy's II will be the site of the biggest Mardi
Gras party in Arkansas, with The 1st Impressions, free crawfish, beads
galore, drink specials and a wild and crazy time…all with no cover
charge (as it is every year…)
For bookings at Grumpy’s Too call (501)225-3768…….
The storied White Water Tavern continues to pack 'em
in for their excellent live music program. Set to appear are Jump Back
Jake, The Bulletproof Vests, Dangerous Idiots, Underclaire, Blue Screen

Band, a huge Mardi Gras blast with the legendary Chubby Carrier,
Sideshow Tragedy, John Sinclair T-Model Ford and Bow Legged Rooster.
The White Water is one of the very best rooms
acoustically in all creation. Indeed, I have recorded and produced two
albums there, just because of the great sounding wooden room.
Be sure to see our Sound listings for the details
and dates.
For bookings and directions call Matt White at
(501)375-8400…….
Set to appear at West End in the coming month are
Mister Lucky, Taylormade, Monster Party, Bushdog, Sugarcoat, Rockshow,

overall. It is open every day, has a bazillion tvs for sports action,
and they live, eat and breathe sports of all kinds.
The Super Bowl Party at West End is to die for.
There’s an overflowing bar, it’s smoker-friendly,
and they serve their full menu until 1 a.m. 7 days a week.

The Markham Street Grill checks in with their usual

a week, has pool tables, a great bar, and feature all the sports you
can imagine on the big screens.
For bookings contact Clay Griffey at (501)354-9990
in the afternoons.
The Bamboo Club is located at 1111 W. Broadway…
The Chippendales show had to be reset due to the
nasty weather. Look for the rescheduled date on February 18. Same
location - The Peabody - same time and everything. Alas, that's what
happens here in the Altered State, where if you don't like the weather
just stick around for 5 minutes…it will change…
In Hot Springs….
We've been having a time of it in The Spa lately. Of
course with the Oaklawn meet underway it comes as no surprise as that
town is rocking. When the 'Sport of Kings' is happening, I guess,
everyone's royalty…especially if they have a couple extra bucks in
their pockets, and the ability to read a racing form (or to just listen
to the plentiful tips that abound in this city.)
I caught a great set with Dayton Waters at the Big
Chill recently. Dayton is a powerful vocalist and master guitarist, and
he puts out this incredible energy that's as infectious as it is fun to
watch. For a soloist, he makes more music than many full bands I have
seen.
Live music at The Big Chill is every night they're
open - Monday through Saturday - and there's seldom any cover
charge. The food is good, the bars are well-stocked
(pun intended), and the crowd that frequents the place is quite
entertaining by itself.
In the coming weeks look for the likes of Levon
Walkin (every Monday), Jocko, Kasey Kimmons (a very able player who can
also make your heart throb (hey - she's a babe in every sense of the
word), The Pope County Bootleggers, The Terry Black Band, Brian
Bearden, The Dean Agus Band, Trey Johnson & Dave Almond, Chuck
Young and Mike Tabor, Dayton Waters, Heavy Suga & The SweeTones,
and many more.
The Big Chill is a multifaceted club, too, with a
cool downstairs sports club, an outdoor deck, good bar food, and a
couple full bars, too.
There's never a cover charge, the folks are
friendly, and the music is always top-notch.
For bookings call Gina or David at the club at
(501)624-5185…….
Caught a great set of The Joe Pitts band at Maxine's
a couple weeks back, and let me tell you, this man makes musical magic.
This was the official release party of his new cd, One More Day, and he
and the crowd were quite up for it. The attendance was good, and the
drinks and music were superb (not to mention the pizza…)
Maxine's has a great line-up in store for the coming
weeks. Look for shows by Sam Walker, Boondogs, Grace Askew, Jay Michael
Calhoun, Madison Street, The Memphis Pencils, Pretty Things Peep Show,
The Tired and True, Beyond City Lights, Paul Sammons, Star & Micey,
Jamie Randolph & The Darkhorse, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Royal
Bands, Bad Veins, CJ Boyd, CeDell Davis, Brethren and Rocket Queen
among others.
For bookings contact Bill Solleder at
(501)321-0909…….
Caught a great set by Bow Legged Rooster at Odie's.
Every time I see this band I'm amazed. They call themselves a blues
band, but there's a tremendous amount of hard-core steady rock 'n' roll
involved. It's definitely a high-energy show.
And Odie's is the perfect venue for this band, too.
With its laid-back atmosphere, very fine food, exceptional bar service
and downright friendly atmosphere, it stays packed when the right band
is there.
There have been some changes of note at Odie's
lately. Mike Dollins and The Cruize Brothers are no longer leading the
Thursday blues jam. In their place is the Hump Night Blues Band,
featuring Tony Nardi, Larry Womack, Steve Danger and all their friends
who sit in whenever they play…especially Greg Batterton, a masterful
harmonica player and entertainer.
Hump Night hosts the blues jam each and every
Thursday, and all real musicians are welcome to sit in. (Note, I said
"real" musicians…these guys are pros across the board…don't embarrass
yourself if you really can't play…)
Also on the bill in the coming weeks are a return
engagement of Bow Legged Rooster, G Funk with Charles Woods, Jimmy
'Preacher' Ellis, Tony Nardi solo (on his amazing array of keyboards -
especially that B-3 organ), Wallace Poole - the Willie Nelson tribute
artist who sounds so much like Willie it's scary…also check out The
John Calvin Brewer band, the return of Zac Harmon, Jason D. Williams,
The Juvenators, Heavy Suga & The SweeTones and more.
In addition, every Friday and Saturday Paul Dotley
plays the Happy Hour slot (5-8) before the bands appear.
Odie's also has a free shuttle to and from the
track, as well as handicapping tips by Mark The Magician on a daily
basis. (He's great, too…listen to his picks and you will win at the
track…no if, ands and buts about it.)
Odie's is just south of the track on the left going
south…or on the right going north…funny how that works out… Look for
the enormous parking lot full of cars and barbecue trucks.
For bookings contact David Hughes at (501)620-3596…….
I caught an excellent show at Lucky's recently,
featuring Mr. Billy Jones and his hot band. If there is an Arkansas
answer to Prince, he is it. This musician is an all-around entertainer,
and his band is simply one of the best in the area.
Lucky's is a 7-day-a-week rock 'n' roll bar,
featuring live bands Thursday through Saturday, really top-notch bar
food, myriad food and drink specials, a primo stereo for dancing, pool
tables, arcades and a virtual party going day and night.
Coming to the club in February are Billy Jones,
House Arrest, Crash Meadows, Moon Krickets, The Big Boys, N.T.O., The
Jason Helms Band and Terri & The Executives.
And every Thursday is Rock 'n' Rogers, two of the
hottest players ever to set foot on an Arkansas stage.
And Lucky's is only one part of the triple threat of
Joe and Penny Gargano's empire.
On one side is The Porterhouse, a superb restaurant
specializing in great steaks, seafood and deserts. On the other side is
Belle Arti, an authentic Italian Ristorante, complete with a full bar
and two grand pianos.
For information and reservations, call Lucky's at
(501)622-2570, The Porterhouse at (501)321-8282, and Bela Arti at
(501)624-7474…….
One of my favorite clubs in Hot Springs is Smyly's
Crab Shack out on Lake Hamilton.
Here the band Legend performs every weekend, and they are an excellent
group of players.
Legend is comprised of Mike Tabor on vocals and
guitar, Chuck Young on vocals and percussion, Scott Vise on vocals and
guitar and keyboards, and Jerry 'Huey Bob' Hubert on bass.
Smyly's is cool unto itself, too. On Wednesday is
their all-you-can-eat Crab Legs; on Thursday it's a 10 oz. ribeye
dinner for only $10.95; and on Friday it's all-you-can-eat catfish for
$10.95…
A private club, Smyly's can stay open until
daybreak, and has a spacious outdoor patio-deck right on the water,
complete with docking facilities. In the Summer they put live music and
karaoke outside under the stars where it should be.
Membership fees are nominal.
For information and directions call (501)525-0446…….
Another late-night bar in the Spa is Bogart's,
downtown in an old train station. Bogart's is open 7 days a week, has
several full bars, and a kitchen that serves until 4:30 a.m.
There are live bands and karaoke on weekends, pool
tables, a mechanical bull, a killer sound and light system, and this is
where the townspeople tend to congregate when the other clubs close.
For bookings and information call (501)623-5152…….
There's a new restaurant/bar in the Spa worth
checking out: The HS Oyster Bar, on Bathhouse row where Magnolia and
Shapiro's were located. Our old partner in crime Russ Jefferson (of
S.O.B. fame), recently kicked open the doors. They are serving the
great gumbo and creole made famous by The Little Rock S.O.B. back in
the 80s, and there's live music every weekend (Hump Night Blues Band.)
I will have a first-hand look at this place in next
issue, so watch for it.
The HS Oyster Bar is located at 510 Central Avenue.
To reach them by phone call (501)318-1100…….
I mentioned Tony Nardi in the bit about Odie's. Tony
recently scored a long overdue breakthrough of sorts…a big
breakthrough, actually. For all you musicians who have closets full of
old records, listen up:
Local musician, Tony Nardi, finds himself in a
strange position. A 45 rpm record that was recorded by his band, Salt
& Pepper, in 1970, is now being played in dance clubs across
Europe. It also has become a valuable collectable for DJ’s and
“Northern Soul” collectors in Europe.
When Nardi was in the Air Force and stationed in
Thailand in 1969/70, he formed the Salt & Pepper band with five
other GIs.The band members were Nardi on keyboards, Eddie Mobley lead
vocalist, Steve Jarrell on saxophone, Jim Plummer on guitar, Dan
Sullivan on bass, and BT Bailey on drums. It was an
integrated band, which was somewhat rare at the time, hence the name
Salt & Pepper. They were quite successful that year as a soul and
rhythm and blues band, performing in their off-duty hours at military
service clubs, at Pattiya Beach (a famous Thai resort), and around
Bangkok. Early in 1970, the band recorded and pressed two original
tunes – Linda and Man of My Word – in Bangkok. They ordered the minimum
amount to be pressed and put it on Nardi’s label, Heatwave
Records. There was never any professional distribution of the
record. It was sold and given away at gigs and around Utapao Air Force
Base. It received air play on Armed Forces Radio and the BBC English
Language Radio in Bangkok. After their tour of duty in Thailand, each
of the members went their own ways.
Nardi and Eddie Mobley remained close friends over
the years. Nardi also stayed in touch with Steve Jarrell and Dan
Sullivan. Dan Sullivan died in the early 90’s of brain cancer.
When Tony and his wife, Karla, went into the nightclub business in 1986
in Hot Springs, Eddie came from Atlanta, Georgia, to perform with
Tony. This past July, the Nardi’s oldest daughter married in Fort
Collins, Colorado. Eddie sang along with the Hump Night Blues
Band for the reception.
“He hasn’t lost a thing over the years”, says
Nardi. “It’s still a thrill to me to back Eddie up”.
Also, during this past summer, Nardi began receiving
emails from England and Germany looking for copies of this 45. At
first they didn’t think too much of it. Then one night Karla decided to
“google” Man of My Word/Linda and got the surprise of their
lives. They discovered that this past January a copy of the 45
sold on ebay in excess of $3000. This was due to both it’s current
success in European dance clubs, it’s relative obscurity, and it’s
quality. It was never distributed, nor did it receive airplay in the
USA.
Mobley flew in from Georgia to perform once again
with the Hump Night Blues Band on New Year’s Eve at the Embassy
Suites. The Hump Night Blues Band consist of Larry Womack, Steve
Danger, and Nardi.
So.
If you have ever thought about tossing all the old
records in that closet, don't.
Who knows? You could be sitting on a gold-mine…….
In NW Arkansas….
I've been having a great time in Northwest Arkansas
lately, but then if your job is simply to go around to shows and talk
about it, wouldn't you be pleased? Fact is, this job does have its
moments.
I caught a fantastic show with Earl & Them at
George's Majestic Lounge recently and am here to tell you, this is one
of the best bands I have ever heard. The band filled the house as one
would expect, and the party was non-stop all night long. We'll have a
feature article on this band in next issue, so watch for it. Earl &
Them consists of Earl Cate on guitar, Baby Jason Davis on guitar and
vocals, Terry Cagle on drums and vocals, and Mike Murray on bass. With
heavyweights like these, you simply can't go wrong.
George's, of course, is one of the premier music
rooms in Arkansas…and I dare say in the country. With two stages,
jumbotrons to watch and listen to each room, concert-level sound
systems and lighting, two outdoor patios and owners that are even
bigger music freaks than our own staff (!), they feature some of the
best bands in the world on a nightly basis.
In the coming weeks look for the likes of Vince
Herman's Great American Taxi, GUTA and Friends, Cross Canadian Ragweed,
The North Mississippi Allstars, Zach Walther, Wade Ogle & The Sea
Shall Free Them, Pink Drapes, Full House, The Odds, Big Gigantic &
Two Fresh, Casey Donahue, RJD2, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, a cd
release bash with RJ Mischo (see the related article in this
issue)…also look for Tony Furtado, Uncle Kracker, Reckless Kelly, Sound
Tribe Sector 9, Mix Master Mike and Bobaflex.
For bookings contact Brian or Harold at
(479)527-6618…….
One of the coolest bars in NWA is On The Mark. They
serve an excellent bar menu, have jillions of tvs (including seven
huge-screens!), a fabulous stereo system, an overflowing bar serving
all your favorite libations, pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, arcades,
and boast that you can simultaneously watch all the televised games of
all sorts at the same time. And it’s smoker-friendly as well.
Be sure to check On The Mark out on Super Bowl
Sunday and plan to stay for the entire game. The reason is that the
club is giving away great prizes, including a dozen or more trips, a
40" flat-panel tv, and a grand prize trip to the Caribbean (but only if
you're there the entire game…)
For information and directions call (479)575-0123…….
Boomer’s Time Out up in Bentonville is going strong
these days, especially since the football season is back upon us. The
neat restaurant-club is open 7 days a week, and features live bands,
excellent food, a tremendous fully stocked bar, and a crowd that works
there only to cater to your every whim.
Coming up over the next several weeks look for dates
with The Ozark Mountain Drifters, Red Ambition and many more.
They have a massive Super Bowl Party planned, with
all the important fixin's. I mean, hey…this is a sports bar, y'know?
Boomer’s is open every day. There are huge-screens
for sports, as well, and we all know how that goes over in Razorback
country.
It is, technically, a private club, which in
Arkansas means they can stay open later and open on Sunday as well, and
that “members” can partake of the libations from the bar.
For bookings and information, call (479)715-6531…….
The Smoke & Barrel Tavern checks in this issue
with a very fine list of performers.
In the coming weeks look for Tater Famine, Trembling
Earth, SugarFree Allstars, The Plaid Jackets, Tyrannosaurus Chicken,
Hosta, and many more. See our calendar pages for all the listings.
In addition, they are in the process of building
their own brewery, and promise to be pumping out their own suds
sometime in the next several months.
The Smoke & Barrel is open for your libationery
pleasures 7 days a week.
For bookings call (479)521-6880…….
The Greenhouse Grille, on South School, is a
beautiful room. What's more, it's being run by folks who really know
music, like Jerrmy Gawthrop (who put on the Great Unkown Festival a few
years back.
Coming up at the club are the likes of 3-Penny Acre,
Adele & The Matts, Jed Clampit, Kevin Baker, The Skinny Jazz
Ensemble, and many more.
For bookings call (479)444-8909…….
A new venue on Dickson is Rogue Pizza, in the
location where the Gypsy used to be. Set to appear in the coming weeks
are Perpetual Werewolf, The Matt Smith Group, Bent Grass, 1 oz. Jig,
Jovan Arrellano, Apartment 5 and a bunch more.
For bookings call (479)571-5200…….
In our next issue we should have plenty about the
outdoor venues with music, as the weather gets warmer, so watch for it.
The Altered State has many excellent beer gardens and when the music
moves outside things really get their groove on.
We'll see you then…….
In Fort Smith….
It's getting to where I spend as much time in the
Fort as anywhere else. Fact is for years - ever since the tornado took
out a large chunk of Garrison Avenue - there just wasn’t too much
musical going on here. Sure, there were clubs, and sure there were
parties, but the serious lack of spirit that seemed to grip the town
just wasn’t that attractive as a destination.
Not any more whatsoever.
That said, there has always been a great many very
talented players in the area, but I would tend to see them when they
travelled elsewhere.
The Fort is one helluva party town these days, and I
can look at the beautiful resurgence of Garrison Avenue as the reason
for the season.
First off, I need to apologize to Mr. George Hughen
for that ghastly typo in last issue. (His name was listed as Hughes
under the photo on this page…)
What can I say? Excrementum occurrum, George. I did
put the correct name on the directions for the layout artist, but a
quick glance is all it took for it to come out spelled as another name
entirely. Sorry 'bout that, chief…
George Hughen is an old and dear friend, and one
helluva musician. I suggest you catch up to wherever he's playing and
check this guy out. You will not be disappointed, I assure you.
I caught a great set by the Tabitha Graves Jazz Trio
at Old Town the other night and was really blown away. These folks
actually performed many obscure requests and nailed them, especially
when they lauched into a set of Billie Holiday tunes. "God Bless The
Child" is one of my all-time favorite songs, and the way Tabitha
delivered it literally gave me musical goose-bumps.
On the bill in coming weeks are Effron White,
Brandon White, Jody's Aquarium Jam (featuring Jody Andrews), George
HUGHEN and Tom Ware, The Mighty Moon Frogs, 15 Keys, Cortez & The
Stranglers, Greg Madden and Take Two, among others.
For bookings call (479)782-1999…….
The band was scheduled to appear again later this
month, but Dori called and told me some rather sad news: Dan Sanchez
& The Kings Of Pleasure had to cancel after Dan learned that he's
got a case of the Big C. Please keep him in your prayers.
This is quite a fine band and we've written about
them here before. Oh…and speaking of typos (I was speaking of typos a
little while ago), I noticed one in a recent edition regarding that
very band. Where it should have said "Kings of Pleasure" was written
"Kinks of Pleasure." Oops… Given the fact that these folks are blues
musicians it was accidentally fitting, anyway…
R. Landry's continues with their strong music
program this month. Coming right up is their official Mardi Gras blast
on February 6. Look for the SugarFree Allstars, Catfish John & The
Noodlers, Grant Pierson and Rob Caloway, as well as great specials,
drinks, beads, reverie and general naughty behavior (hey - it IS Mardi
Gras, you know…)
Also on the bill this month ae Vis-à-vis,
Effron White, The Sultans of Schwing, The Bannister Brothers Band,
Naked By Nine, Shannon Wurst, 1 Oz. Jig, The Crumbs, Josh Thomas, Chris
Cameron Electric Set, RJ Mischo & His Red Hot Blues Band (cd
release bash), Satellite Hearts, The Pope County Bootleggers, the Will
Gunsellman Duo, Wanda Watson, 15 Keys, Keith Nicholson… And don't miss
the Gary Hutchison birthday bash, featuring Oreo Blue and Kirby Kelly.
Also, Rob & Shannon Caloway will be performing a rare Sunday show
on Valentine's Day. And of course, being Arkansas' answer to New
Orleans, you can bet there will be a sweet Fat Tuesday bash on February
16th, with The Crumbs playing.
For bookings contact either Dori or Natalie at
(479)783-2505…….
The newly opened Venue is also planning a Mardi Gras
bash on February 13. This will feature The Ben Miller Band as well as
The Crumbs, and it is promised that Smilin' Bob Lewis will perform his
illustrious Fire Dance. A whole world waits with anticipation I'm sure.
The Venue is open on weekends, but is available for
private showcases, receptions, birthday parties and special events.
For information call (479)782-1616…….
Hero’s checks in as we go to press with a stellar
line-up. In the coming weeks look for The Super Smashed Brothers, The
Ben Miller Band, Cadillac Johnson, Self-Inflicted Chaos and many more.
They'll also be ground zero for a major Super Bowl
party on the 7th.
And by the way, be sure to stop by on Tuesdays and
Thursdays as they feature their infamous tacos for only a buck a piece.
(And of course, on Thursdays there's always some variation of The
Crumbs performing…)
For bookings call the club at (479)784-5055…….
The Hangin’ Judge Saloon is still rocking right
along. Billy and Sonya Garner have a real winner on their hands, and
the crowds there nightly are a testament to this.
Set to appear at the club are Ollie's Trashcan, Left
Of Center, Judge Parker, Hed Tripp, Heroes, The Crumbs, Sons of 4, Full
Flava Kings, and much more.
For bookings, and to see who’s on the bill, call
(479)494-0000…
I'm quite pleased to report that Second Street Live
will kick off their new season soon, and very shortly will be opening
their new venue (of the same name, of course.)
The first few shows will be elsewhere until the
facility is completed. Look for Lynn Miles at the Event Center, Chris
Smither (also at the Event Center), A Trio of Poets at The Media
Center, and in mid-March, they will feature Ruthie Foster for their
Grand Opening, followed by Del Castillo a couple weeks later.
Second Street Live is located at 101 No. 2nd. To
reach them, call Dick Renko at (479)782-5483. And watch these pages in
the coming months as we shed a little light on the subject…….
Coming next issue, by the way, we should have the
initial line-up for the gala reopening of Bill Neumeier's Rib Room.
This is a world-class facility that Bill built last year that earned
international acclaim pretty much right away. To say it's a sweet music
room is simply an understatement and a downright injustice. Hey - it's
cool…
For bookings and information call (479)494-RIBS…and
keep an eye on these pages for announcements…
In closing, I must remark about the fact that the
Gary Hutchison School Of Music will be closing its doors at the end of
February. Gary Hutchison and John Magness have had the school for a few
years with only mixed success. Alas, the economic turn-down of the past
18 months has registered yet another business catastrophe. As far as
the music students go, Gary will be moving his classroom back to Sigler
Music just up the street. And there are some great deals on new and
used instruments to be had he assures me, so stop on by and check it
out…….
