[Nightflying Notes From The Pub]

A hen is only an egg’s way
        of making another egg…
            ---Samuel Butler

Greetings and salutations to you all! It is now 5:15 in the a.m. of this decidedly fm day, as I sit and ponder the varities of this, the noose-paper bidness. It seems that some people - gasp - actually think that the noosepaper bidness is on it’s way out…that the plethora of electronics these days are the death knell of the print bidness. Personally, I say Poppycock! As long as people can wad up a paper and carry it with them to sit under a tree and read…or to the bathroom…or to a restaurant…or on the bus…or wherever they want to get into the perusal of the readable news, we will have noosepapers. (Hey…try to wipe yourself off with that MacBook next time you run out of toilet paper and see how far it goes…)
I once actually had to explain to a concert promoter from Chicago just what an outhouse is…he didn’t believe me…”But what about when that hole in the ground gets full? How do you clean it out?” “You don’t…you dig another hole and build another little building…”
Such is modern-day life in the big cities…

In Particular…
For all its fanfare, Wakarusa has come and gone for yet another year. The 2010 version was an easy sell-out a couple weeks beforehand. Around 20,000 music lovers gathered at Mulberry Mountain for four days of music, love, camping and partying and it was a total success as far as everyone is concerned. Except for the few expected gaffs the party was a sheer delight. Even the local wildlife had fun I’m guessing, given the treat-factor inherent in a large-scale hippie campout in the woods. Some 100+ bands appeared at the fest - and those were just the scheduled ones. Many make-shift groups sprung up throughout the grounds, with jam sessions lasting until daybreak every day. (I’ll tell you this: you don’t go to these affairs expecting to get a good rest, that’s for sure…the constant noise factor means that sleeping is rare…you grab a nap when you can. But let’s face it: there’s a lot more to do in these four days than catch up on your snoozing…)
For one thing, our Nightflying racks throughout the festival grounds had to be continually restocked, and I’m thinking again about that outhouse concept. As much as the promoters worked to restock the porta-potties several times a day, methinks that many of our pages came in quite handy in other ways than sheer literary pleasures…
Kudos to the planners of Wakarusa for a wonderful gathering once again. This was the second Waka in Arkansas, and we are told that the planning is already underway for 2011.
We’re also told that the annual Harvest Fest will be held this year October 14 -16. Yonder Mountain String Band will be the headlining act, and several dozen bands, artists and people alike are scheduled to appear. See all the info elsewhere in this issue…
Kudos, too, to Dewey and Amber Patton, the owners of Mulberry Mountain, for their foresight in turning their farm into a permanent music venue. They built a number of stages, prepped the grounds for crowds (camping areas, shower houses, cabins and the like), and welcome the musical activites and those who partake of them to their wonderful mountain hideaway…just the perfect place for when you feel like inviting 20,000 friends over for an extended visit, you know.
Festival organizer Brett Mosiman did a splendid job to say the least. More than 3,000 staffers can’t be easy to handle, but all in all everything went relatively smoothly.
I’ll have an interview with the man next time out, so watch for it…

In general…….
The festival bug has bitten many in the Altered State. Coming up is a new festival in Dardanelle - on July 17 - on the banks of the Arkansas River. The day-long affair is being sponsored by the Front Street Grill, and will feature Warrant, The Meanies, Bombay Black, The Nigel Dupree Band, McCuin and The Muddlestuds. See our back page for more details, and make a point to join us.

In other news, Nightflying is celebrating 30 years of existence all this year. To note this milestone, we’re throwing five different anniversary bashes throughout the year, the first of which happens on Saturday, June 26 at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville. On the bill are The Cate Brothers Band, A Good Fight, The Tiffany Chistopher Band and American Aquarium.
The second of the five happens on July 26 at Sticky Fingerz in Little Rock. Our performers are Earl & Them (aka, The Cate Brother Band), The Meanies, Pope County Bootleggers, The Bluegrass Bombers with Steve Evans and John Lee (Amy Lee’s daddy), Bob Boyd and a bunch more.
Our third bash happens on August 1st in Fort Smith at Neumeier’s Rib Room, and will feature The Benjamin Del Shreve Band, The Crumbs, Gary Hutchison and John Magness and many more yet to be determined. We’ll tell you all about it in our next issue when everything’s firmed up.
We’ll also throw parties in Eureka Springs and Hot Springs after these.
Hey - partying for a living doesn’t suck, you know?!

In Closing…….
Well, kiddos, that’s about all the time we have to chat, as it’s time to call this a wrap and get it off to the printer.
Make a point to support live musical endeavors as much as possible. It’ll do wonders for you, I assure you…and it just might save your soul!!! And we all know how important it is in life to have soul, now don’t we…….

In Central Arkansas….
The White Water Tavern has been tearing it up lately and a glance at their upcoming calendar shows that this trend will continue.
Set to appear in the coming weeks are American Aquarium, Sarah Hughes, Frown Pow'r, Androids of Ex Lovers, a Summer Solstice Party with Seth Baldy, The Damn Bullets, Sad Daddy, The Charles Woods/Jess Hoggard Band, a gala CD release for The Salty Dogs, Doug McKean & The Stuntmen, The Spirit Family Reunion, world-class songwriter/performer Malcomb Holcombe, Eric Somner, Jim Mize, Steve Howell, The All-Girl Boys Choir and Lucky Bitch, among others.
Since the club pushed the smokers outside the room is different than I've ever known it. You can breathe in there now! The food tastes even better too, but I'm thinking with the smoke gone the aromas of the down-home cooking come through a great deal more.
For bookings and directions call Matt White at (501)375-8400…….

Set to appear at West End in the coming month are Mister Lucky, After Eden, White Collar Criminals, McCuin, Max Taylor & The Blue Katz, The Seth Freeman Band, Rookie of the Year, The After Party, School Boy Humor, Bushdog and a bunch more.

The club is open 7 days a week, has a multitude of tvs for all kinds of sports action, a full bar and excellent food (serving the full menu until 1 in the a.m.), and is smoker-friendly.
And as the name implies, the barbecue and other delights from the kitchen make this the perfect night out in the rock. And the bar is perhaps the most heavily stocked of any bar in the state, complete with all the favorite call brands, and some high-caliber specialty libations as well.

Down at the other end of the Market is Sticky Fingerz Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicken Shack, one of the hottest clubs in Arkansas on the music front.
Thanks to everyone for coming out to the Unknown Legends Musicians Relief Fund party a couple weeks back. We raised both some cash and, more importantly, awareness of the organization.
What is it? This is a charitable organization for the benefit of any musicians and their families when dire straits arise. Most musicians are in that government-acknowledged 44 million Americans who lack health insurance, so if the chips get down there's now this group to turn to for assistance. Go to www.unknownmusiciansrelief.com for details, and join up. As a 501c3 any donations are completely tax deductible, too, which doen't hurt anyone…especially at tax time, you know.
On the bill in the coming weeks at Stickys are Band of Heathens, Matt Stell, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Weakness for Blondes, Dash Rip Rock, Charliehorse (see the feature in this issue), Sad Daddy, Bleu Edmondson, Roger Creager, Bryan Frazier, Young The Giant, This Holy House, Starroy, The Last Straw, Adam Hood, Dikki Du & The Zydeco Krewe, The Banjamin Del Shreve Band (new cd to release), Free Micah, Randall Shreve, and a bunch more.

Music is every Thursday through Saturday, and leans towards acoustic-type artists.
Look for Rob Moore, Jeff Coleman, Steve Bates, and Grayson Shelton and more. See our Sound listings for details.
    For bookings call (501)376-PINT…….

Midtown Billiards is the closest thing to a New Orleans smoky dive in Arkansas, yet they can stay open all night (and you'd be hard-pressed to find a place in the Big Easy that can do that…)
MidTown is open each and every day until 5 a.m.
For bookings at MidTown, contact Conan at (501)372-7110 or email him at moeman03@comcast.net…….

Denton’s Trotline is racking it up as a nightclub destination. It's not been a year yet since they got the liquor license and built that wonderful deck, and the crowds are there virtually every night (except Sunday, actually)…

The Markham Street Grill checks in with their usual excellent line-up.
It is open 7 days a week, features great live music, very fine food, excellent bar service, and a staff that will cater to your every need. (Well, most of them, anyway…ahem…)
It features free Wifi, a multitude of tv screens and serves up all things sports, and serves the full menu late into the night.
Set to appear in the coming weeks are White Collar Criminals, Shannon Boshears, Voodoo Sauce, Daryl 'Harp' Edwards, The Big John Miller Band, Brown Sole Shoe, Paperboys and High Ball.
See the Sound pages for all the listings and dates.
They also feature a special late-nite happy hour from 10-12 nightly, for those of you who can't make it to the early happy hour, you know…
And they are literally counting the days until Dugan’s Irish Pub, their new River Market location, is up and running. I'm told it should be up and running sometime in July.
Keep an eye on these pages and we'll let you know.
    For bookings call (501)224-2010…….

Counterpoint is the all-nite bar in North Little Rock, and hence is busy all night every night. There’s live music every Saturday, Karaoke with Larry P on Sunday, free pool, darts and ping pong every Monday, Karaoke with Debbi T every Wednesday, a live dj on Thursday and Friday…on Tuesday they want you to come and entertain them…
They've been holding off on booking new bands lately, as they're in a tiff with North Little Rock regarding their closing times…which have been when the sun comes up.
We'll let you know how that goes in next issue.
For bookings call Cheryl Drennan at (501)771-5515…….

In Hot Springs….
Partying in The Spa is always a thrill, as there's so much to do. The clubs are many and the lakes and general ambience of the town are worth writing home about.
Of course, my favorite place to kick back is The Big Chill, with its' relaxed atmosphere and the great crowd that hangs there…for a player it's like partying in your living room
The Chill is now open 7 days a week, with live music every night, and karaoke on Sundays.
Set to appear in the coming weeks are Dayton Waters, Shane Simanton, Joe Hall, Levon Walkin, Tabor & Young, The Hired Hands, Dave Almond, Gary Hutchison & John Magness, Lightnin' Lee Langdon & David Ball, Jocko, Trey Johnson and The Pope County Bootleggers.

For bookings call Gina or David at the club at (501)624-5185…….

I got to see a great show at Odie's House of Blues a few weeks back. The John Calvin Brewer Band was tearing it up and the energy was positively riveting. John and his fine band fit together like the fingers on a glove, each seeming to know exactly what the others are up to. It's that kind of musical synergy you only find with seasoned musicians who don't let their egos and/or feelings get in the way of the show, and it's somewhat rare.

Odie's has a pretty full calendar of events over the next month. Coming in the next several weeks are JP Soars & The Red Hots, the very hot Bow Legged Rooster, Strangelove (featuring former members of The Famous Unknowns), The Hump Night Blues Band, The Midnight Shuffle Kings, Blind Pig recording artist John Nemeth, the return of The John Calvin Brewer band, rockin' piano-banger Jason D. Williams, Nick Moss & The Fliptops…and much more.
In addition, during the Arkansas HOG Rally, the club will be featuring a 3-day barbecue cooking contest, with over $2000 in cash prizes divied up for best ribs, best sauce and best beans. To enter contact Odie's at (501)623-6343 for all the details.
And don't forget that every Thursday is an open-mic blues jam hosted by the Hump Night Band. Tony, Larry and Steve are all top-notch players and it's a downright treat for any musician to feel that kind of musical support.
For bookings at Odie's call David Hughes at (501)620-3596…….

I mentioned some months ago that Joe and Penny Gargano had created something of an empire in Hot Springs, with Lucky's, Belle Arti and The Porterhouse.
That's even more true now, with the opening of The Regency Banquet and Reception Room.
Located directly across from their other clubs, The Regency is an enormous and very plush facility, custom designed for all sorts of parties and receptions and the like. Indeed, it would be a perfect place for a formal wedding party or some such event.
For more information, or to inquire about booking the room, call Penny at (501)617-3070…….

Lucky's Bar & Grill is a hot rock and roll night club. It is open 7 days a week, has great food for lunch and dinner, has a full bar, live bands on weekends, pool tables, arcades and a top-notch stereo system, AND it's smoker-friendly.
There's never a cover charge, too, which certainly always appeals to us poor reporter types.
On the bill in the coming weeks are House Arrest, After Eden, Terri & The Executives, Crash Meadows, Billy Jones, Raising Grey and Jet 420.
For bookings call Mary Holt at (501)909-9430…….

Capone's Ohio checks in with a fine roster of music. Watch for John Calvin Brewer, The Colt Landers Band, some guy named robb, Riff Raff and Acoustic Merlins.
    For bookings call (501)627-0702…….

Bogart's is no longer open every day, but when they are it becomes the late-night party central.
On the bill are McCuin, Aaron Owens, The Jason Helms Band, and for the HOG Rally look for Midnight Parade.
For bookings call Angela at (501)624-5455…….

Just across from Lucky's and down a bit is, of course, Maxine's. Live music is most nights, and they specialize in what they call more of an alternative musical fare.
Set to appear are Chuck Dodson, Wighead, Mousefire, Adam Arcuragi, Stella's Old Soul, Dreamfast, Johnny Rocket and a bunch more.
A word to the wise: Neither Bill or Shea are handling the bands or publicity at the club any more, so call Agnes or Kevin.
    For bookings call (501)321-0909…….

In NW Arkansas….
We are extremely excited about our Nightflying: 30Years To Life anniversary bash coming up on June 26. Instead of a cluster of 20 bands this time out we pared it down to a mere four: The Cate Brothers Band, A Good Fight, The Tiffany Christopher Band and American Aquarium. The party will kick off around 7, and the Cate Brothers will take the stage at 8. There will be anniversary treats and of course our suitable-for-framing (wearing) commemorative t-shirts. And the fact that it's supposed to be a full moon, too, means that things will probably get even wilder than normal. (Of course, "normality" is much like "regularity"…doctors say what's regular is what's regular for you…
Make a point to help us celebrate on Saturday. I can promise you a real good time as we kick off the next 30 years…

George’s Majestic Lounge checks in with yet another fine roster of talent for the coming weeks…that is, in addition to the aforementioned bash…
Look for the likes of Cletus Got Shot, The Rocket Boys, Monster Heart, Kilroy, Hank III & Assjack, Izzy Cox, a huge free show featuring Indigenous and Kory Montgomery, MOV, Matt Stell, Black Pearl, TJ Scarlett, The Bel Airs, Pope County Bootleggers, Gary Hutchison, Silverstone, Scarlett Knight, Arkansas' American Idol Kris Allen, Dirtfoot, Boom Kinetic, Full House, the incredible LaFuSo, Lez Zeppelin, Joseph Israel, Great Scott and a lot more.
A word about Joseph Israel. He and his fine band are set to appear at George's on the 11th, and at many other clubs in Arkansas in the coming weeks.
Joseph is the son of Joe Fennel, the man who created Jose's and Bordino's, and who took young Joseph to Jamaica as a child where he began his love affair with Island music.
Join Joseph and the Jerusalem Band, with their soul inspiring roots-rock-reggae as they hit the road this summer.  They will be performing three Arkansas shows including the Gulley Park Summer Concert Series on Thursday July 8th.  Other Arkansas dates are July 7th at The Rev. Room in Little Rock, and Georges’ Majestic in Fayetteville on the 11th.  Outside of Arkansas Joseph Israel will be   performing a special acoustic set in St. Louis, MO on July 9th and Tulsa, OK on July 10th.
Joining Joseph Israel as a special feature on this tour is the soulful vocalist Rochelle Bradshaw from Kingston, Jamaica.  She will be performing solo as well as singing harmony with the Jerusalem Band.   The group will be sharing material from the highly anticipated new CD “Kingdom Road” set to be released this fall.  They will also be performing the 2009 Hit song “Soulution" from the Lions of Israel release “Soulution Ep ", available on iTunes.   Joseph gained recognition as an artist in 2007, when his first album “Gone are the Days” reached #11 on the Reggae Billboard Charts.  This tour is like a homecoming for me “says Israel. It has been over a year since we played in the Midwest as a band.  I have been writing a lot and working on some fresh sounds.  I look forward to share this new music with everyone. This summer we will be giving them a preview of what is to come.  I think people will get a pleasant surprise."
For bookings at George's, contact Brian or Harold at (479)527-6618…….

The Smoke & Barrel Tavern hosts fine music and is a real strong party room. Unfortunately we were unable to reach the club at presstime so we have no calendar info for you this time out. Just the same, whomever they feature is always top-notch, so check it out.
The Smoke & Barrel is open 7 days a week.
    For bookings call (479)521-6880…….

Both Jose's locations are back in the musical saddle now that the sunshine has returned. The Dickson Street store has returned to shows in Streetside. On that bill in the coming weeks are Chester P & The Vinyl Kings, Earl & Them, Jason Strode, The Odds, FOS PRoject, John D. Levan, Sarah Hughes, Joe Giles & The Homewreckers, Lil Hoojin, Robert Hatfield, The Travelling Wheelbearings, Big Bad Bubba and many more.

Powerhouse Seafood has kicked up the music on the patio again as well. Set to appear in the coming weeks are Boom Kinetic, After The Crash, Travis Kidd, The Full House Band, Charliehorse and Hardaway & The Commoners.
The Patio at Powerhouse is a near-perfect outdoor show venue, with a good sightline and excellent acoustics (for an outdoor spot). The food and service is also quite good, and they are indeed a seafood restaurant…a good one, too, that gives places like Red Lobster the moniker of "Wanna Be," plain and simple.
    For bookings call (479)442-8300…….

There's a new club in this town of clubs. Mojo's Pints & Pies is located at 1200 N. Garland, and serves excellent pizza and libations. And to look at their calendar they are really into music as well.
Set for the coming weeks are Mike Bewley, Pura Vida, Candy Lee, The Pope County Bootleggers, Hippie Jam, Jaff Alvine, Beans & Cornbread, Toe Funk Jam (yes…you read that right), The Harrison Brothers Big-Ass Tent Show Revival, the Dave Bright Band and much more.
    For bookings call (479)935-3459…….

In Fort Smith….
I've been having the time of my life in The Fort lately. Of course, with the warm weather all the outdoor spots are in high-gear, and Garrison Avenue is cooking…and I don't mean just from the weather, either. Music is everywhere, and wandering up and down that
Avenue is very much a treat in and of itself.
Webby D's was really rocking the other night. It just happened to be owner Stephanie's 30th birthday when I walked in, and the mood was decidedly festive.
Coming in the next several weeks are Hillbilly Vegas, Quadrajet, The Bannister Brothers, Great Scott, S.I.C., Young Grammarians, Milestone, Gary Hutchison and Square One.
Every Thursday is Gabe Cunningham and Roger Jones, for your acoustic pleasures.
Webby D’s is a private club for liquor law reasons, but memberships are nominal.
    For bookings call (479)651-7555…….

The Rib Room is going great guns, as you knew it would be in The Summer. Of course, it was built for this…partying under the stars as God surely intended (otherwise he wouldn't have built the sky as one tremendous amphitheatre…
Coming up at the Rib Room in the next several weeks are dates with Earl & Them, Michael Shipp 'Roosterboy', JJ Grey & Mofro, Charliehorse, Mas Agua, Copesetic, Sister Hazel, Aslyn, Willie Stradlin, The Bel Airs, an entire week of fine tribute bands, Wrought, the Bob Kramer Incident, Gary Hutchison, Lez Zeppelin, Bricks In The Wall, the Motor City Madman hisself, Ted Nugent, No Justice, Velcro Pygmies, madman Randy Crouch, Grant Tracy, Miss Used, Johnny Cooper, Jackson Taylor, Fly-By Radio and much more.
And of course, they create some of the finest barbecue known to mankind and womankind, too. If you haven't ever experienced this you're missing out. 'Nuff said.
For bookings and info call Bill at (479)494-RIBS…….

    R. Landry's checks in with a truly stellar line-up for the coming weeks. Coming up at the club are American Aquarium (one of the bands at the Nightflying bash in Fayetteville), harp master RJ Mischo & His Red Hot Blues Band featuring Paul Bryant, Candy Lee & The Sweets, Vis A Vis, Will Gunselman, Matt Flippen, Brian Martin, The Tom Ware Trio (incredible!), Quchita, Randy Burden, Naked By Nine, Keith Nicholson, The Sarah Hughes Band, JoJoMas, The Sultans of Schwing, The Mighty Moon Frogs, and on July 24 the return of The Women's Singersongwriter Round, featuring Patrice Pike, Bernice Hembree, Carter Sampson and Candy Lee.
    Don't miss this show!
To reach them by phone, call (479)783-2505…….

Heros has some excellent shows on tap. Look for Tyrannosaurus Chicken (Smilin' Bob & Rachel), 10 Cent Hat, Great Scott, Greg Madden, Rollo Tumasi, The Crumbs and a lot more.
The club is open every day, has live music on most nights, a late-night munchie menu (with corn-dogs and tacos worth taking home), has pool tables, arcades, a spacious dance floor and a good juke box…and the fact that it has a full bar and doesn't usually charge a cover charge make it my kind of place.
For bookings at the club call (479)784-5055…….

Old Town of Fort Smith is regaining its vibe from years ago, and I'm glad to see it…as I'm sure many others are.

And finally, Mike Gonzalez and the Heros/Old Town/Venue crowd are putting on a gala festival at the end of the Summer. River Jam Fest 2010 will feature many of the best bands from Wakarusa, including Ivan Neville's Dumstaphunk, Papa Mali, EOTO, Big Gigantic, Telepath and several dozen other bands for a three day show. See the Concert listings for the complete line-up, and go ahead and mark your calendars. It'll be worth it, and you don't have to camp in100-degree weather to check it out.
And as we go off to the press, the good folks of Fort Smith are making the final preparations for the Riverfront Blues Festival happening this weekend.
All in all, Fort Smith is becoming one very hot music destination…….
