---Michael Acklin
Well, well now. Last colyum was writ the week before the ice storm, and how could I have known?
First day, i was called by the muse to write my name in the ice
in the old hillbilly way. I was answering that call, propped on the
MINI Cooper, and had gotten just past the "d" when a voice (really,
honest) said "get back in the house." unusually enough, I zipped and
complied. Three steps into the house and I heard a crash.
Back out on the porch I looked at the top of a huge tree, stabbed into
the ground just about where i'd been standing. The rest of the
week and a half was written in kerosene heaters, blessed candles,
flashlights, and acoustic bass and guitar in the living room. 10 days
and not a punch thrown.
What's it like spending a week with a bass player? That's not in the
realm of what The Nightie pays me to say, and who can blame them, bless
they itty-hearts. Me and said bassist been more or less marooned with
one another for more years than one should count. The gig still works
and we ain't declared bankruptcy yet, and after all, we are sitting
here tonight waiting for the roast to roast and the snow to finish
snowing and on the whole feeling pretty good about stuff. Last night it
was me and said bassist (Steve Ward), Dr. Rodney Williams, Dan Kerlin,
and Bob Myers, along with Ms Vicky (who'd surprised one and all by
showing up even though we'd not exactly communicated well about the
gig..(blush) and an incredibly good time was had by a full house at The
Grill. Yers truly settled into a cool after-party and saw the blessings
of the Muse clear enough to actually do some finger picking, bit of
slide, and even a few new songs. De Lawd been better to us than
sometimes we might feel deserving.
This is a bit shorter check-in than I wanted to have this mont, but
life's been a bit out of our control. We'll be back with more
"remembrances" next time. For now we're thanking our lucky stars and
waiting for the roast to roast. Cheers and blessings to all.
